A review of the actual book, not the price of the book!

Admittedly, I am a long-time John Corey fan. I keep expecting the author to eventually run out of the smart-alec remarks that John Corey is famous for, but he just keeps 'em coming. In The Panther, John and his wife Kate are sent over to Yemen ("If the earth had an anus, it would be located in Yemen"), ostensibly for one purpose, but of course office politics within the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, FBI, and CIA quickly turn it into something entirely different and, of course, far more dangerous. Nelson DeMille's talent lies in maintaining the irreverent character of John Corey while simultaneously writing a tense, thriller plot. The story is fast-paced, which keeps the reader's attention, while experiencing laugh-out-loud moments when Corey makes his random observations ("But the problem, as I saw it when I was there, was that we had a very small American presence in a very hostile environment. A recipe for disaster. Ask General Custer about that.")
As usual, DeMille uses current Middle East events to fuel his plot. Given his character's ties to 9-11, he creates taut, believable (for those of us not in law enforcement, lol) scenarios that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you haven't read a John Corey novel, it's perfectly okay to start with this one. Just be prepared to want to go back and read all the previous ones! As long as DeMille keeps writing them like this, I'll be buying them.

I'm a big fan of Nelson DeMille and, normally, his books are real page-turners. I usually can't put them down. This book was soooo boring! It seemed that the entire book was a series of set-up lines so John Corey (the main character) could make some smart remark in an attempt to be funny. It took until about 85% through the book before anything of substance happened - much of the conversation between the characters was so repetitive - I believe that was done to make the book longer. Even after the little bit of action in the book, the ending did not satisfactorily wrap up the story. I will definitely not buy another book with the John Corey character in it. I will also be cautious about buying any more Nelson DeMille books.

He's a good author.

The more I read Nelson DeMille the more I see his evolution from a hard core espionage writer (Charm School) to a more refined author who has developed a serial protagonist in John Corey who is somewhat virtuous but also can be reactionary. In the Panther, DeMille mixes modern day history and world tensions with fantasy stories and heroics to address them. He has a sophisticated satirical wit woven throughout the book that's entertaining and amusing. The plot has realistic possibilities and problems solving. His characters are relate-able and engaging.
If you haven't discovered Nelson DeMille, read him. He's a good author.
