A good old-fashioned (1977) comedy novel that provides a lot of insights about life in Lima, Peru in the mid 20th century. The protagonist is an impoverished 18-year old law student of sorts who spends his time editing the news bulletins pasted together from the day’s newspaper headlines for a fly-by-night radio station to support himself and writing stories. He becomes friends with the eccentric scriptwriter of radio serials who becomes a local sensation by writing several extremely popular series simultaneously as well as taking part in the reading of them, until he starts mixing up and killing off characters and has a nervous breakdown. For his part, the hero falls in love with his aunt’s 33 year old divorced Bolivian sister, “Aunt Julia’, and finally manages to get around the law requiring parental consent for minors by forging his birth certificate and finding a shirtless black fisherman mayor of a remote village who marries them for a small bribe. This causes a huge uproar among the extensive family, with the father brandishing a revolver and insisting that Julia leaves the country, but love prevails and the marriage lasts for eight years. When they divorce, he marries her niece; apparently everyone is related in Lima. Well written, entertaining and a lot of local color.
